Winter is almost here and that means the 2020 legislative session is just around the corner. As with any session, the House of Representatives will be tackling numerous issues that are important to the people in the 17th District.

Things in Olympia might seem a little quiet right now. But House Republicans have been hard at work throughout the state in our local communities.

A lot has happened since our last session ended in April. And that means we’ll have some tough issues to iron out in the Legislature come January.

Transportation Issues

Transportation continues to be a hot-button topic throughout the state, including Vancouver. The biggest news was voters passing the car-tab initiative (I-976) to lower licensing fees to $30. But the people of the 17th District have another big transportation issue to consider: replacing the I-5 bridge between Vancouver and Portland.

I-5 Bridge: Rep. Brandon Vick (18th District) and I are both on the I-5 Bridge Commission. We’re working hard to make sure the people we represent have a voice in this ongoing issue that affects the lives of so many people in Southwest Washington.

So far, discussions between lawmakers have been very positive. Members of the commission from both states see the need for a new bridge, as well as additional crossings. I look forward to further input from both the commission and the public as we move forward towards what we hope will be a successful project.

Car-Tab Initiative (I-976): As for the car-tab issue, the people have spoken. I’ve heard your vote and I honor your decision. But this issue is not over. Democratic lawmakers from several cities are challenging the validity of I-976. Some opponents have already filed lawsuits to overturn the initiative. The fallout from I-976 might end up being one of the biggest issues we face in the upcoming legislative session.

Committee Assembly Days

November is an important month in the Legislature. The House and Senate will be meeting November 21-22 for Committee Assembly Days. During these two days, House republicans will gather in Olympia to discuss our legislative priorities and gather for caucus meetings. These meetings will play a key role in setting priorities for the 2020 session.

Open Mic Meeting

This “Open Mic Night” will give you the opportunity to voice your opinion and share your questions and concerns with me.
