Rep. Paul Harris will participate in a virtual classroom event this week to help promote STEM programs in local schools. Covington Middle School will be receiving an educational grant from the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), Friday.

The $2,500 grant will go toward the Evergreen School District Foundation to support the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs offered to the Covington Middle School’s students.

“This is a great opportunity for students in the STEM program at Covington,” said Harris, R-Vancouver. “I’m a strong supporter of alternative forms of learning and these programs are helping kids in so many ways. I also want to recognize the diligent efforts of the teachers and administrators from Covington who played a key role in making this happen.”

Through the Evergreen School District Foundation, Ms. Michelle Albright was awarded the $2,500 grant which allowed her to purchase stream tables for her 8th-grade science class. She plans to use the tables to help teach students about erosion.

“STEM programs continue to evolve and advance, which is great for students in Vancouver and all over Washington,” added Harris. “I’m excited to see the results of this grant and how it’s going to help these students continue to advance their education and skills; and how it might play a role in helping our environment.”

The event will take place virtually Friday, May 7, during the students’ regular class time. At that time, Harris is schedule to announce the grant before the teacher gives her class instruction for the day, which will include the stream tables purchased with the grant.
