Union High School student Reid Shepard recently worked as a page in the Washington State House of Representatives, sponsored by Rep. Paul Harris, from the 17th District.

Reid, 16, is a member of his school’s National Honor Society, the STEM club, and the Voters of Tomorrow club. Reid is also a competitive swimmer, interested in social justice issues, and enjoys hanging out with his friends.

Among his duties as a page, Reid was responsible for delivering messages and documents to state lawmakers working in various locations, including the House chamber. He also attended Legislative Page School during the day, where he had the opportunity to learn more about the legislative process.

“The page program is a great way for students to get an inside view of the legislative process,” said Harris, R-Vancouver. “I enjoyed working with Reid. He had a positive attitude and lots of enthusiasm. I wish him the best in all his future endeavors.”

Each year, students from around the state apply to participate in the House Page Program, except for the last two years due to the pandemic.

To become a page, applicants must have a legislative sponsor, be between the ages of 14 and 16, and obtain written permission from their parents and school. Pages earn $35 per day while serving in the program. For more information about the House Page Program, click here.

The House Page Program runs through the entire session, which is scheduled to end on Apr. 23.
