Cornerstone Christian School student spends a week in Olympia’s Legislature

Cornerstone Christian School student, Micah Smith, paged in the state House of Representatives April 15 – 19. He was sponsored by his 17th District Rep. Paul Harris. Micah is the son of Lewis and Terri Smith of Vancouver.

“I am pleased Micah made the effort to come to Olympia and get a firsthand look at how the Legislature works,” said Harris, R-Vancouver. “It is essential students stay engaged with the political process. We are at a very important time in politics and the more students stay involved the better understanding they will have of the process and the issues before us.”

During his week in Olympia, Micah attended page school every day to better understand the operations and actions of the Legislature. At the end of the week, Micah worked on and promoted a mock bill regarding the issue of gun violence.

As part of his page duties, Micah navigated the many buildings on the Capitol campus and delivered messages and documents to legislators and staff.

Each year, students from around the state apply to participate in the legislative page program. Students spend a week attending page school, learning the inner workings of state government and assisting legislators on the House floor. Pages earn $35 per day while serving in the program.

To become a page, applicants must have a legislative sponsor, be between the ages of 14 and 16, and obtain written permission from their parents and school. For more information about the legislative page program, visit: http://www.leg.wa.gov/House/Pages/HousePageProgram.aspx.
